London is a really exciting place for public art – designers are getting more confident with colour here. That&#8217;s why, with so many things being cancelled and postponed, I was very happy to see the first London Mural Festival go ahead. Let&#8217;s celebrate the artists and murals of the city!

Maya Capital: 160 Blackfriars

The Leadenhall Building, also affectionately known as ‘The Cheesegrater’ has a series of prominent trumpet like air vents on its forecourt, designed by architect Richard Rogers. We worked with a collection of artists to transform Webheath Estate as a part of London Mural Festival. The newly painted estate also features a three-storey photo-real mural by renowned Australian street artist Smug. The larger-than-life portrait features longtime estate resident June Barber. The mural can be seen by plane as you arrive into Heathrow airport, and took over four weeks to paint!

Ballymore: Brentford Project Car Park

Our artists did a fantastic job and it’s really quite striking in real life. I hope it makes for something interesting and surprising (in a good way) for people to see, inspiring them to learn a bit more about the industry that once was in Spitalfields. Mark Allum, Designer at Global Street Art

Essential Living: Spitalfields Silk

We worked with an architecture firm to figure out how to paint this wall, which had a very specific rendered surface. We ended up having to use a specially developed paint, which could only be hand-applied by brush.

Novella: Huge Bookshelf

Mr. Doodle’s mural – a 90-metre piece of art spanning both sides of the bridge –came together to close our 2024 London Mural Festival. The incredible 58 new doodles took him just one week to complete, blending endless characters, objects, and patterns in his unmistakable style. Global Street Art were incredibly inspired and in awe of how much Dr. Mya had already achieved as a prominent ornithologist, environmentalist, and diversity activist. I created the design for the mural out of hand-cut pieces of paper in a limited colour palette, forming a flowing and well balanced composition that sort to engage the viewer with playful elements woven through.  In the painting process, I tried to keep the collage qualities, including the drop shadows and imperfections. Adding colour to any space always brightens my day, but seeing the residents’ faces light up as they witnessed the artwork being produced was an inspired moment.
